What is Incoloy® 825

Incoloy® 825 is a nickel-iron-chromium alloy with increased amounts of molybdenum, copper, and titanium. It is designed primarily for excellent corrosion resistance in harsh environments.

Characteristics of Incoloy® 825

  • Excellent Corrosion Resistance: Especially against sulfuric and phosphoric acids.
  • Good Mechanical Properties: Even at elevated temperatures.
  • Resistance to Oxidation and Scaling: Up to moderate temperatures (~540℃ or 1000℉)
  • Stabilized Against Sensitization: Due to the addition of titanium, reducing the risk of intergranular corrosion after welding.

Corrosion Resistance of Incoloy® 825

Check out our chemical composition break down of Incoloy® 825 and find out how each element affects its corrosion resistance.

a picture of the chemical composition of incoloy 825 material

Acid Resistance

Incoloy® 825 has excellent sulfuric, phosphoric, nitric, and organic acids. This is due to the presence of Copper. Nickel and molybdenum boost resistance to reducing acids and chloride-containing media.

Resistance to Oxidizing

The combination of high nickel and chromium makes it highly resistant to both oxidizing and reducing agents, unlike some stainless steels that are good only in one or the other.

Pitting and Crevice Corrosion Resistance

Molybdenum and chromium protect against localized attack, even in marine or brine environments. The PREN for Incoloy® 825 is ~ 31. Get more information on our blog discussing Pitting & PREN.

Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC)

Nickel content is critical for resistance to chloride-induced SCC, making it superior to stainless steels in harsh environments.

Intergranular Corrosion

Incoloy® 825’s Titanium inclusion ensures resistance by stabilizing the structure against sensitization during welding or heating in the critical range (600-800℃).

Incoloy® 825 Comparison with Other Alloys

  • Incoloy® 825 has better corrosion resistance than 316L stainless steel in strong acids and chloride environments.
  • Incoloy® 825 is similar to Alloy 20 with better mechanical properties in high temperatures.
  • Incoloy® 825 is not as strong in extremely high temperatures or under mechanical load as Inconel® 625 or Inconel® 718. However, it performs better in environments that primarily require corrosion resistance.

Ordering Incoloy ® 825 Fasteners

Incoloy® 825 stands out as a highly versatile corrosion-resistant alloy, engineered to perform reliably in some of the most demanding chemical and marine environments. Its unique blend of nickel, iron, chromium, molybdenum, copper, and titanium provides outstanding protection against a wide array of corrosive agents, including strong acids, chlorides, and oxidizing or reducing media. Whether you’re designing equipment for chemical processing, pollution control, or marine applications, Incoloy® 825 offers a proven solution that balances performance, durability, and cost-effectiveness.
