Fasteners for Pulp & Paper Mills

Fasteners for Pulp & Paper Mills

Pulp and paper mills in the southeastern and northeastern United States, as well as northwestern Canada, are increasingly exploring the adoption of higher-grade nickel alloys and specialty stainless materials within their facilities to address severe corrosion challenges.

Nickel Systems, Inc. is a direct stocking distributor of AL6XN, Duplex 2205, Super Duplex 2507, Hastelloy C276, Inconel 625 and 317L Stainless fasteners. These materials help combat iron contamination and process corrosion at paper mills. We are starting to hear from companies such as Canfor Pulp, Glatfelter, West Rock and many of the equipment manufacturers who service the paper industry.

The utilization of AL6XN fasteners in bleach plants is on the upward trend, whereas Duplex 2205 and Super Duplex 2507 are frequently employed in Kraft liquor applications. The “Kraft Process” relies on caustic soda and sodium sulfide, while the “Sulfite Process” involves sulfurous acids, and “Soda Pulping” employs sodium hydroxide.

In the manufacturing of white paper, bleaching is a crucial step that also eliminates lignin from the pulp. There are two primary bleaching methods: Elemental Chlorine Bleaching and Elemental Chlorine Free Bleaching. Elemental Chlorine Bleaching is notably more corrosive. Nickel Systems maintains an inventory of fasteners essential for the bleaching process.
